So dog is mans best friend ha? Well not when they leave presents for you all over you house. Many people prefer to purchase puppies, however there are those that prefer full grown adult dogs. Potty training an older dog can at times be difficult as they have already more than likely had bad habits ingrained into them. I am sure that you have heard the expression “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks?” Well I am here to tell you today that this could not be farther from the truth and by following these 3 Steps to success for older dog potty training, Fido will be going in the right place in no time.

1) Always praise the good and try to ignore the bad- Obviously your main focus is to get your dog to eliminate outside as opposed to in. The best way to do this is with positive reinforcement. While it can be difficult to ignore when Fido has left you a present at the bottom of the stairs, scolding the dog after the fact does absolutely no good.

Never rub your dogs nose in his mess. I am sure you have heard of this method before. I would strongly advise against it as it teaches them to hide it, eat it and avoid going in your presence. The idea behind it is that the dog will associate the mess on the floor with not going in the house. Dogs are not capable of complex thoughts like this. Instead of associating the punishment with going inside, they learn that eliminating will make their owner upset. It also can cause submissive elimination. Secondly, it can cause a infection in your dogs nose that if left untreated can travel to the brain and kill your dog. I strongly advise against rubbing your dogs nose in his doo for these reasons.

2) Pick A Trigger Word – You need to come up with a word that you will use when you want Fido to do his business. A older dog can easily become confused as to what you want if you are always using different words to describe a action that you want him to perform. So if you want Fido to go “potty” make sure that you always use the word “potty” so he can associate that word with a particular action.

3) Select A Spot- Potty training an older dog will become much more easier if you are consistent with your commands and where you would like it to go potty. In addition to the trigger word that you have selected taking your dog to a familiar spot where it should do its business combined with the command of “Go Potty” will help your dog to associate the command and the familiar spot with a action that you would like him to perform.

Again, when you dog goes in the correct spot… PRAISE… “Good Fido Go Potty” Praise is the single most powerful tool that you can have when potty training an older dog.

Crate training in very beneficial when it comes to in house dog potty training, because it will assist you in training your dog self control as well as spare you a great deal of effort in cleaning up after your dog when he has had accidents in the house. The crate forces your dog, even young puppy, to keep it in for a period of time. However, do not keep him in the crate for too long and do not use the crate as punishment.

Dogs have a natural instinct not to mess in its shelter, but if there is plenty of space, it will relieve itself as long as there is enough space for it to sleep in. So in selecting a crate remember to get a crate that is perfect for your dogs size.

It is also a good idea to get a crate big enough for your dog when he is his adult size. You can divide it to fit him as he grows. In this way you will not have to buy more than one crate for your dog as he gets bigger.

When choosing a crate for your dog, you should take into account that it needs to be the right size for the dog, not only for general house training purposes, but especially for potty training.

If the crate is too big for your dog, he will not see the need to keep it in if he has to go.He will also not have a problem with relieving himself on the one end of the crate and sleep on the other end.

A very young puppy should not be left in the crate for more than 2 hours at a time depending on its ability to control its bladder. As your puppy gets older you will notice that he can keep it in for longer periods of time.

So it is really a matter of your puppy”s individual development and abilities. There is really no rule in this regard. Older dogs can be left in the crate for longer, even overnight.

You should monitor your dog while he is still not 100% crate trained yet as he might get anxious and hurt itself in an attempt to escape from the crate.

Happy puppy house training.
About the Author: Read more about this and other topics related to follow wedding_favors

Teacup puppies are one of the more lovable things in the world. But when your dog starts sniffing and walking around the floor, you have to start worrying. The mutt has to go. And unless you want its wastes all over your carpet, we suggest you start potty training. There’s no forgiving owners who get headaches due to dog shit when they didn’t even try to potty train their teacup puppies. And to think the teacup puppies has just a few grams of waste a day because of their size.

First, if you want to train your pet to do its thing outside, you have to use the word “Outside” and get them excited about it. Say it in an excited tone. You may also want to train your puppy to use one specific area on a consistent basis and keep the clean up area to a minimum. Better yet, use a reward system. Bring your dog outdoor to one specific area to do its business and then treat him with a reward afterwards. Do not give him his treat whenever he fails to follow this routine. This usually works for both young and old dogs.

If you decide to do potty training indoors, it is important to stick to one method. This would allow your dog to familiarize themselves with only one specific method. A Teacup Puppy only knows what you teach it if you teach it consistency. So pick a method and stick with it. Confusing the teacup puppy won’t help the whole potty training.

For instance, once you pick a spot for your potty training, cover that area with paper. That way, the puppy will get used to doing his business in paper. Start by covering large areas with paper and then reduce the area as you puppy gets used to the idea and until you can designate a very specific spot. This paper method also makes it easier to clean up afterwards.

But most importantly, do not underestimate your Teacup pets’ intelligence. With proper routine, they can make the connection that going outside would win him his reward. Generally, would only take a few days before they realize what they have to do. Or what you want them to do.

Here are some tips you can use for training your dog. Get some treats ready, you can do these right as I explain them!

Potty Training-
For this one you could get a bell at Walmart and tie a string on it and hang it on the doorknob, before you take your dog outside take his/her paw & have them ring the bell and say ‘Gotta go potty? Gotta go outside?’ After awhile of doing this they’ll be ringing the bell to let you know that they need to go! But beware once they know they go outside when ringing the bell they might do it a lot just to go out & not have to potty. It’ll be up to you to know when your dog has to go.

When your outside keep repeating ‘Go Potty!’ until your dog goes & when they do, wait until they’re done & praise them & say ‘You went Potty! Good girl/boy!’

*If your dog goes potty inside and you catch them in the act pick them up & take them outside and say ‘Go potty outside.’ If you didn’t see them doing it call them or go find them take them to the spot & show them say ‘NO! Outside!’ & then take them outside; even if they don’t have to go because they just did they will get the hint that you go outside for that.

Sit-
For this I would recommend getting some treats and breaking them up into small pieces. Get in front of your dog and make sure they’re facing you, say ‘Sit’ firmly and take your hand and push gently on her/his but until s/he are sitting then give them a treat. Have them get up again and repeat the process about 5-10 times.

Lay down-
Again I would recommend getting some treats and breaking them up into small pieces. Have your dog sit then pull their front legs outward until their in a laying down position and day ‘Lay down’. Give them a treat and some praise & repeat the process. Keep this up and they should have this down in no time.

Shake-
Get some treats! Have your dog sit and then grab their paw gently and say ‘shake’. Give some treats and praise and repeat. This one is relatively easy, should pick up on it fast.

Bye-Bye-
This trick is a bit more advanced your dog should learn how to shake before attempting this one. Have some treats ready. Have your dog sit and say ‘shake’ then when they bring their paw up don’t shake it but take their paw and wave it up and down 2 times and say ‘Bye-Bye’. Give them a treat and praise and repeat; after awhile leave out the shake. This is a bit more complicated but this is how it worked with my dog! Just do the motion with your own hand going up and down saying ‘bye-bye’.

Stay or Wait-
Get some treats ready. This one is a bit more advanced also for some dogs just depends on what breed. Have your dog sit and hold your hand out like your halting something and say ‘Stay’ and back away a couple steps. This one is more advanced because their instinct is to follow you, and if they do you say no! have them sit again and say ‘Stay!’ take a couple steps back again and keep saying ‘Stay’. If they stay give them some treats and praise & repeat. When they get good at staying you can walk into another room and trust that they’ll stay right there. It takes work but it’ll pay off.

Come-
Get treats. For this I recommend that your dog know how to stay. Have your dog sit & stay then back away and call his/her name & say ‘Come!’ & I like to point in front of me when I say it. If you dog just sits there when you say their name & ‘Come!’ take a treat and put it on the ground in front of you. The true test of this if your dog actually listens is if they can ‘Come!’ when called when around other people or dogs.
About the Author: Read more about this and other topics related to oscommerce themes

Let’s be clear from the start. A potty is not used when potty training puppies. What we are talking about is house training your puppy so that it eliminates outdoors or in a designated indoor area rather than anywhere in the home.

Don’t look on potty training puppies as the unpleasant or messy side of owning a puppy. Rather see it as the first stage of a bonding process. One that will result in a happy and healthy relationship. That is the real reward of house training a dog. Start potty training as soon as you get your puppy home. But remember they don’t yet have full control of their bladder and bowel functions. Feeding should take place at the same times every day. Do not feed with four hours of bedtime and withdraw the water bowl two hours before bedtime. A routine is essential. That means you too have to stick to a routine by getting up and going to bed at the same time every day. Take the puppy outside into the yard or for a walk first thing in the morning, 10 to 15 minutes after every meal or drink and last thing at night. Do not play with them until they have eliminated. If after 10 minutes there is no action take the puppy back to its crate. Wait 10 to 15 minutes then take them out again. Be sure to praise the puppy and reward them with a little playtime every time it does “the business”. Restrict your puppy to rooms with washable floors until he is house trained.

Shih Tzu potty training is probably one of the most frustrating things you will ever have to do as a Shih Tzu owner. Shih Tzu dogs are very elite animals that are comfortable when things are going the way they want them to go. But they are also very clean animals that prefer concrete or stone surfaces to dirt and grass as their toilet area and you can use this information to your advantage and as a way to possibly shorten the housebreaking process.

Housebreaking a Shih Tzu takes months so be prepared and remain patient. You can choose to use the crate method of housebreaking or you can set aside a small piece of your home for your Shih Tzu. Either way is fine just be sure you pick one way and stay with it because you are in for the long haul and if you change anything then you will undo all you have done.

The crate method of Shih Tzu potty training is where you get a large crate and set up their food, water, and bedding in their crate and then close them up in the crate when you are home. Every 45 minutes you need to take the Shih Tzu out to the designated toilet area and wait to see if they do anything. Shower them with praise if they go in the designated toilet area. The crate is their living space and they will not soil their own space. Play with them while they are in their crate so they know it is their space. Remember that a Shih Tzu will not understand punishment they only understand praise.

The method of giving a piece of the house is pretty much the same as a crate except instead of a crate you are closing the Shih Tzu into their living area in one room of the house. Choose a room that has low traffic but someplace you can keep an eye on the dog and then use the same procedure as the crate. Do not leave the Shih Tzu confined for long periods, as they will react negatively to that.

Once you feel like the dog is getting the hang of Shih Tzu potty training then it is time to move their living area to other parts of the house. Once they understand that they have living areas all over the house then they will not soil in the house. It takes a long time and requires a great deal of patience, so if you don’t think you are up to it then a Shih Tzu may not be for you.

Shih Tzu dogs do not understand punishment and punishing the dog for making a mess where it is not supposed to will only confuse it. If you have started to move the living area around the house and the dog starts to make a mess then return to the original living area and start over. Be patient and good luck. Remember that it is nothing personal, you just need to get them to understand the rules and Shih Tzu dogs are terrible with rules.
About the Author: Read more about this and other topics related to free themes

The main thing is to be prepared! Have all your supplies ready before the big day arrives, preferably no less than one week prior to the due date. Formerly dogs whelped just wherever, in the barn, under the porch. Today’s breeder, however, has a real vested interest in their pregnant shih tzu, one of time, money, energy and emotional investment. Breeding shih tzu is a big, big job and full of labor. If you are passionate about breeding shih tzu, however, it all boils down to labors of love!

Care involves meeting nutritional and emotional support and detailed attention to the environment you provide during whelping and later. Not only is the whelping place of utmost importance to the physical and emotional well-being of your shih tzu, but also the “layette” you assemble to assist in the whelping and care of the puppies is of equal importance.

The whelping box is by far the largest and most obvious piece of equipment you must have. Cardboard boxes just won’t do. There are manufactured whelping boxes you can purchase. You “can” use plastic storage bins (these are very easily cleaned). I like using a wood box the size of a child’s toy box. I have mine special made to a specific size for each of my shih tzu. I have mine painted with a durable paint I can disenfect easily. I like to put some colorful decales of some sort for decoration on outside the box. I have mostly pastel colors like baby blue, baby yellow, baby pink. The wood boxes are warmer in my opinion. I use regular heating pads in the boxes under the babies for extra warmth. These boxes can also be used as sleeping boxes of which most of my shih tzu adore. They can be made very cozy with soft blankets and homemade quilts, which my shih tzu also adore. The box should only be big enough for the mother to fully stretch out in. Bigger is not better. Most of my boxes measure outside 21 inches wide and 31 inches long. Inside the box is 18 inches wide and 29 inches long. I have a trim on the bottom that is 22 inches wide and 32 inches long. Whatever whelping box you use should be sturdy and should not rock, should allow the mother to climb in and out easily. A solution of Clorox bleach and water is a good disinfectant to use on the whelping box daily.

The whelping box should be ready for occupancy about two weeks prior to the litter’s due date. Show the mother her box as her personal territory. Encourage her to sleep in it before delivery. Let her get use to getting in and out of the box. A shih tzu unacustomed to her whelping box may refuse to use it. She may try to carry her babies off somewhere else. Exterior doors to the whelping box area should remain closed for the mother and puppies privacy. The environment should be draft-free and kept a consistent temperature.

The area you make for whelping should be large enough for the box, her food and water and a place to occasionally rest away from her puppies.

Be prepared to give up a portion of your home for no less than three weeks. My moms and puppies have a permanent spot reserved especially for them until delivery of the puppies. Ideally, do not move the mother and puppies from the area where puppies are whelped. Once puppies are able to try and climb out of the box, they can be moved along with mother to another location if you desire.

Expect your life to be disrupted when you and your shih tzu mother are raising a litter. Most puppies arrive at odd hours, seldom during the day, most often in the middle of the night. You need to be present for each whelping, but especially for the whelping of a first time mom. Without you, mom may become confused or excited and scatter or neglect some of the puppies.

You will need a separate puppy box. Small vinyl shoe boxes work well for this. Have it lined with a heating pad and a soft, flannel baby blanket. After the mother has whelped her second puppy, remove the first and place in the puppy box. Sometimes this is hard to do. Shih Tzu mothers are very possessive of their babies. It is important to warm up newborn puppies as soon as possible and the mother’s whelping box will most likely be cold and full of whelping fluids. It is more important now to get the babies as warm as possible. You can place another baby receiving blanket over the puppy box to make an incubator-type atmosphere and hold in the heat. If puppies settle down and do not cry, the temperature is just right. There will be plenty of time for them to be with mom after all puppies are whelped. If time in between puppies seems to be long, you can place the puppies back with mom to nurse if they will. This helps stimulate the labor pains of the mother and to deliver the next puppies. If puppies refuse to nurse, place them back in the warming box. Change the whelping box blankets or towels after the 3rd puppy is whelped. Mom will need the smell of her newly whelped puppies to wake up her instincts to continue deliveries, cutting cords and tending to her offspring.

The heating pads should be square or slightly rectangular, be waterproof, have a protective cover and be free of any strings or ribbons. Heating pads ust have a variety of temperature settings and an automatic turn-off switch for safety. Have this puppy box warmed and ready to receive the newborns. As mentioned before if puppies are sleeping quietly, the temperature is just right. If the puppies move about crying, they are either too hot or too cold. If the puppies are bobbing their heads and crying, they are hungry. Attempt to place them on the mother to nurse. As soon as all puppies are whelped, place clean linens in the whelping box and all the puppies back with mom to nurse. Place the heating pad in the box with mom and puppies.

You may also need the following items: sterile hemostats or sterilized blunt-end scissors, heavy sterile silk sewing thread, dental floss or heavy sterile silk sutures, petroleum or lubricating jelly, several pairs of sterile surgical gloves, a rubber pediatric bulb syring, surgical antiseptic scrub for your hands. Ink pen and paper.

The well-equipped “doggie midwife” will also have on hand a tube feeder and syringe, and some puppy milk replacer.

Please rate this article.
About the Author: Read more about this and other topics related to manage resource box links

The best way to start the training process with your new puppy is to spend as much time with her as possible. Every action that you want encouraged should be immediately praised – Happy voice and lots of hugs and kisses. To start off potty training your puppy, take her on a potty break every hour. When she is in her “potty area” tell her “Go Potty” in a calm and happy voice. BE PATIENT! And when she does go potty, immediately say “Good Potty” and give her hugs and kisses and positive attention.

If your puppy has an accident in the house, don’t ever punish her unless she is in the act. If she already has made the mess and you find it later, punishing her is pointless. She will not connect the punishment to the accident and will not understand why she is in trouble. It will instill fear with no positive results. Simply clean up the mess, make sure to take her out for her next potty break and praise her immensely when she has a good potty. If you do catch her in the middle of an accident, tell her “No! Bad Potty” in a low, firm voice. Bring her immediately to her good potty area and give her the positive attention. Using “Good Potty” and “Bad Potty” will remind her that “potty” is using the bathroom and she will learn from the positive attention.

If you can’t monitor her at night, consider getting a crate. Make it as cozy as possible. She will need enough room to comfortably stand up and turn around. Keeping her in here overnight should help her to hold it until morning, when you can take her to her potty area and give her lots of praises.
About the Author: Read more about this and other topics related to mom blog

Is hamster potty training possible? Yes it is! Hamsters are clean animals whose natural habit is to urinate in the same spot all the time, usually in a corner of the cage.

Start by finding the suitable hamster potty. Some are triangular to fit nicely into a cage corner, others are rectangular. You can make a homemade hamster potty yourself if you prefer making it instead of buying it from a pet store. First find a small, sturdy plastic container with a lid. Then cut a 2 to 3 inch (5 to 7.5 cm) diameter hole in the side of the container. Located this hole about 1 inch (2.5 cm) above the base (1/2 inch [1.3 cm] for dwarf hamsters) so that litter won’t scatter when the hamster is doing his/her business! Last, sand the edge smooth for safe entries and exits. A homemade hamster potty might have to be replaced from time to time if the plastic absorbs the urine odor or if the hamster shows any interest in gnawing it.

You can also use a gnaw-proof glass potty instead. The great thing about a glass potty is that you will only need a 1-pint (500 ml) wide mouth jar or a ? pint (250 ml) jam jar for a dwarf hamster – pop it into a corner of the cage and there you have it! An instant hamster restroom! It’s easy to clean, it’s not a tooth target and it will last as long as your hamster does. Just make sure that the toilet jar is big enough for your hamster to turn around in.

Store bought hamster potties come complete with a little bag of litter and a scoop like shown in the above hamster potty picture.

After choosing the hamster’s potty, the next step is for your hamster to pick out the spot for his lavatory. Be patient. Don’t put the litter box into the cage until your hamster christens a corner. When the potty is in place, the potty training can begin. Cover the bottom of the potty with litter and add some urine-soaked bedding along with a few droppings.

As soon as your hamster is awake, place him at the outhouse opening of the hamster’s potty so that he can get a whiff of what’s inside. His natural instinct should take over when nature calls and prompt him to step right in to relieve himself. Never ever force your hamster into the potty. Most hamsters eventually catch on.
About the Author: Read more about this and other topics related to finance blog

Chihuahua potty training is a very unavoidable part of owning this dog, especially in a house. Unless you want to have a very smelly and very dirty house, you need to know the essentials of house training a dog. This article is more focused to the people who are purchasing Chihuahua dogs or puppies which have not yet been housebroken and are quite clueless on how to do it.

Firstly, prepare to be standing around a lot and pushing your dog towards a specific area where you want it to do its business. You must be a very, very patient person, especially when you have a dog as flighty and as high strung as a Chihuahua. Because of their size and their metabolic rate, these Chihuahuas need to relieve themselves at about an average of six to eight times a day, and that is quite a lot. Potty training of these dogs should begin right when you bring them home and when they are puppies. It is harder to train a dog that is fully grown and used to doing their business anywhere they please.

Training them when they are young means that they get used to the idea that they need to go to location A or location B or their litter to deposit their giving’s. The thing you should know about these puppies is the fact that they do not yet have the muscles and control needed to hold in their wastes, so when they are puppies, they the d to do it at random times. This is the same with human babies if you realise, so you need to set some ground rules. Confine them to a certain area of the house at first so that cleaning up is easy and when you do that, make sure it is related to the place that you want them to do their potty.

Once they are able to smell their urine in the places that they should be doing everything else, it is much easier for you as a trainer to get them to house train. Next, you need to get into the psychology of dogs, as they do not think like us. Most of the time, they do want to please their owner so you need to use this to your advantage. Use raw and carnal emotions like telling the puppy that urinating on the living room floor is bad. Sooner or later, he or she will realise that what they did was wrong. In the end of it all, they do want to please their masters.

So when they do it in the right place, give your Chihuahua a treat. Once you are able to get your dog to relate urinating or defecating on different parts of the house with your unhappiness and disapproval, then you would have won more than half the battle. All you need to do is to show them where they should be doing it, and over a few weeks, you will have a fully trained Chihuahua. These are the right way for Chihuahua potty training.
About the Author: Read more about this and other topics related to eco-friendly favors
